The People

Matt, Jen, Conrad and Mark are from Chicago and started living aboard in 2012 when Conrad and Mark were 6-1/2 and 5 years old. They both love nature and the beach. They keep begging to become stranded on a deserted island somewhere so we can build our own shelter (I think we have enough Lego to accomplish this) and find our own food. Yes, we are homeschooling. No, we don't have TV, for the most part. No, we are not crazy, as far as we know.

Much of Matt's sailing experience comes from helping race his friend Ken's Reliance 12 Metre on Lake Michigan, as well as smaller vessels. He also learned a good amount about Privileges, having had the opportunity to sail them during the buying process. Jen has sailed a Pearson 26 and O'Day 21, as well as Sunfishes and Hobie cats.

  The Boat

Perry is a 1992 Jeantot Privilege 48 catamaran. The name is short for peregrine falcon, one of the kids' favorite animals. Here is a post with more details defending the name. See a video tour of the boat here.

  1. Just ran into your mom and dad at the Wilmette sailing beach and they gave us an update on your trip. I'm psyched to see your blog and read about your progress. What an amazing adventure!

  2. Hi Matt & Jen,

Thank you for visiting our Atoll Island, Mortlock (Takuu) in Bougainville. Our people have shared wonderful stories about your visit, including Field Trip too.

The photos you took, I will share on one of our FB pages, Mortlock (Takuu) Island Climate Change Association (MTICCA). We're most likely to be the second 'world climate change refugees' if we don't get any support from outside donors for some of our projects.

Anyway we hope that you will reach out and tell the world that there's an island that is just about to vanish from the surface of the earth.

We wish you all the best, and safe journey in all your travels.

    Many thanks,
    David Marena
